It’s a pretty good bet that you’ve got porcelain or ceramic tile on at least one wall or floor in your home. You may also have granite, quartz, or marble on your countertops, stainless steel on your appliances, and wood veneer on your cabinetry. These are all well-known materials that have been around for years. Chances are, when you were — or will be — selecting your new-construction home options, these show up in your choices.

You may not be aware of some new surface options that you may want to ask your builder about and use in your new construction home. Many were featured at Design & Construction Week 2025 (DCW) in Orlando in January. DCW combines the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show with the International Builders Show in one massive three-day expo that brings together the latest products, designs, and professionals. Here are new surface options that were on display at these shows that are worth considering:

Appliances

Stainless steel has been the finish of choice for high-end kitchens for more than a decade. In recent years, black stainless has been gaining appeal for its smudge-free properties. Brands like Bosch and Dacor introduced brushed black stainless lines at DCW, while Rohl debuted a coordinating sink.

Countertops and More

This category offers durable, low-maintenance innovations:

  • Porcelain Slabs: Large-format porcelain or sintered surfaces mimic wood or stone without upkeep. These grout-free slabs work for islands, countertops, and more.
  • Dekton: A blend of porcelain, glass, and quartz by Cosentino, this heat- and UV-resistant material suits indoor and outdoor use.
  • GEOLUXE: Made from natural minerals, this 2025 KBIS award winner is recyclable and available in polished or honed finishes.
  • FENIX NTM: A matte, repairable surface from Arpa USA and Northern Contours, ideal for cabinets and countertops.
  • Akron: A mineral-resin hybrid by Acquabella, designed for modern bathrooms with integrated sinks and textured neutrals.

Wall and Floor Innovations

  • Stikwood: DIY-friendly, reclaimed wood peel-and-stick panels. Updated for 2025 with improved water resistance for kitchens and bathrooms.

Final Considerations

While these materials offer style and durability, always prioritize your personal needs, tastes, and property requirements. Surfaces are long-term investments, so choose wisely!
