Pre-Vacation Checklist: 11 Essential Tasks to Secure Your Home

Whether you’re going out of town for the weekend or leaving for a week or two, there are essential steps to ensure your home stays safe and sound while you’re away. Follow this checklist for peace of mind during your trip and a seamless return to your home!

1. Arrange for a Friend to Keep Tabs on Your House

While house-sitting isn’t mandatory, having someone you trust check on your home is wise. Ask them to drive by periodically, collect packages, or even enter the house to ensure everything is in order.

2. Clean Out Fridge/Freezer of Perishables

Avoid returning to spoiled food odors! Discard perishable items in your fridge, freezer, and pantry that may expire during your trip. Seal open containers tightly to deter pests.

3. Clear Garbage Disposal

Take out all trash from kitchen, bathroom, and other bins. Run the garbage disposal with water and vinegar to eliminate food residue and prevent odors.

4. Put Mail on Hold

Request USPS to hold your mail if you’ll be gone for more than a few days. Alternatively, ask a trusted neighbor to collect it. This deters burglars who look for piled-up mail as a sign of vacancy.

5. Arrange for Grass Cutting & Garden Watering

Mow your lawn before leaving and water it thoroughly. For trips longer than a week, set sprinklers to run every 2-3 days (if permitted by local regulations). Arrange for plant care via a neighbor or professional service.

6. Use Timers for Lights

Set indoor and outdoor lights on timers to mimic activity. Focus on porch, hallway, and living room areas to deter potential intruders.

7. Turn Off Main Water Supply

Prevent costly leaks by shutting off the main water valve. Note: Outdoor sprinkler systems may still function independently if needed.

8. Adjust Thermostat for Efficiency

Set to 85°F in summer and 50-60°F in winter. Avoid turning heating completely off in winter to prevent frozen pipes.

9. Unplug Electronics

Save energy and reduce fire risks by unplugging TVs, computers, small appliances, and chargers before departure.

10. Lock All Doors and Windows

Conduct a final walkthrough to confirm all entry points are secured. Close curtains to hide valuables from view.

11. Set Security Alarms

Activate your home alarm system and notify your security provider about your trip. Share access codes with anyone tasked with checking your home.

Now relax and enjoy your trip! With these steps completed, you can trust your home will be safe and welcoming upon your return.
