Just like when you stay at a hotel, you want your guests to feel at home. It’s easy to do that, if you include some important essentials in your guest room.

“The most successful vacation rental homeowners we work with focus on the three Cs of any good vacation experience: comfort, convenience, and community,” says Rob Stephens, a seasoned host with 18 years of experience in Denver. “Consider each when investing in a new home. Ideas include access to a private bath, a private entryway, an in-room refrigerator, and an outdoor food prep/eating area.”

A Clean Space

Your guest room should be clean and uncluttered. Provide a fresh, welcoming environment with:

  • Space for luggage storage
  • Fresh sheets, pillows, and towels
  • Minimal clutter to avoid a cramped feel

A Comfortable Bed

Invest in a quality mattress and bedding to ensure guests wake up refreshed. Avoid old or lumpy beds, and include a heavy blanket or quilt for added coziness.

Household and Area Guides

Simplify your guests’ stay with two helpful guides:

  • Household Guide: Instructions for TV, HVAC, security systems, and Wi-Fi details.
  • Area Guide: Local dining spots, transit stops, and must-see attractions.

Bathroom Essentials

Stock the bathroom with the three Ts:

  • Towels: 2 per person, plus washcloths and hand towels.
  • Toiletries:
    • Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap
    • Toothpaste, floss, mouthwash
    • Travel-sized razors, deodorant, sunscreen, and pain relievers
  • Toilet Paper: Extra rolls within easy reach.

Don’t forget a hair dryer and plunger!

Quality Sheets

Choose soft, non-itchy linens—no need for luxury, but avoid scratchy materials. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.

Something to Read

Leave books, magazines, or local newspapers for downtime. “Providing reading materials is a nice touch,” says Stephens. “Give guests the option to start a book and take it with them.”

A Lamp and a Fan

Place both on a nightstand for comfort:

  • A lamp for relaxing without harsh overhead lights.
  • A fan to let guests control their temperature.

Extra Touches

Elevate the experience with:

  • Phone chargers
  • Alarm clock
  • Chocolates on the pillows

With these essentials, your guest room will become a cherished retreat that visitors remember long after their stay. Happy hosting!
