Exposure to the elements makes exterior pipes especially vulnerable. Protect them by following these steps:
- Disconnect hoses from spigots, drain remaining water, and store them indoors.
- Wrap exposed pipes with foam insulation, ensuring no part is left uncovered.
- Attach an insulating hood over spigots, securing it flush against the exterior wall.
- Seal cracks or holes where exterior pipes connect to your home’s interior.
If temperatures are expected to drop extremely low, shut off water to exterior spigots, drain pipes, and leave faucets open.
