An Ideal Summer Typically Involves Spending Time in a Sparkling Swimming Pool

The luxury of a private pool does come with some responsibility, but keeping your pool crystal clear doesn’t have to be as burdensome as you might think. While all pools are different, basic pool maintenance is the same. The most important way to maintain a pool’s health is through routine care. Without proper maintenance, your pool could fall victim to a variety of unfortunate conditions. Green water and cracked pipes are not exactly appealing features in a swimming pool, after all. Below are 6 steps you can follow to ensure your pool remains in great condition for many summers to come:

1. Book Yearly Service Appointments Now

Before you start lounging poolside, book your yearly service appointment to find any problems before you start using your pool. Leave it up to the professionals to find and fix any issues with cracks, plumbing, filters, heating systems, and other complex features.

2. Maintain a Constant Water Level

The water level should stay halfway up the opening of the pool’s skimmer. If the water is too low, add more with a garden hose. If it’s too high, use a submersible pump to drain the excess. After adjusting the level, re-check the chemical balance. Check the water level when manually skimming debris to ensure it doesn’t fall below the skimmer, which could indicate pump damage.

3. Get Rid of Debris

Skim the pool daily with a net to remove leaves, pollen, and debris. This improves circulation, reduces chlorine needs, and prevents sinking debris. Trim nearby foliage or use a pool cover to minimize debris. Scrub the pool weekly with a soft brush (for vinyl or fiberglass) or a harder brush (for plaster-lined concrete) to prevent algae and calcium deposits.

4. Vacuum and Filter the Pool

Vacuum the pool weekly for 30 minutes. Filters require less effort but need monthly backwashing to clean internal pipes. Both methods reduce debris and unwanted growth.

5. Keep the Chemicals Balanced

Test chemical levels weekly. Balanced water is clear, odorless, and leaves minimal residue. Unbalanced chemicals can cause skin or eye irritation.

6. Winterize Your Pool at the End of Each Season

Proper winterization prevents cracks and bacterial growth. Follow these steps based on your climate:

For Non-Freezing Climates:

  • Lower the water level
  • Remove equipment and toys
  • Balance remaining water chemistry:
    • pH: 7.2 – 7.4
    • Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
    • Calcium Hardness: 180 – 220 ppm
  • Clean the pool
  • Lubricate O-Rings
  • Add winterizing algaecide
  • Cover the pool

For Freezing Climates:

  • Drain all water from the pool and pipes
  • Clean the pool
  • Lubricate O-Rings
  • Cover the pool

As you lounge poolside this summer, keep these maintenance steps in mind. Consistent care ensures your pool stays inviting, clean, and ready for endless enjoyment.
